In case you skip it...

This episode establishes some significant elements of Ferengi culture. First, it introduces the leader of the Ferengi Alliance: Grand Nagus Zek.

It also introduces the Rules of Acquisition: a few hundred pithy sayings about business and profit that form the basis of Ferengi society and which are frequently cited throughout the series.

A few things happen during this episode that are worth knowing about:

• Feeling pressure from Zek, Rom pulls Nog out of Keiko’s school. Jake secretly meets up with Nog to continue his lessons and in particular to teach him how to read.
• Zek establishes that the Ferengi are extremely interested in the business potential of all the new customers and trade opportunities in the Gamma Quadrant.
• Zek also fakes his death for a time, naming Quark as his successor. Quark enjoys a brief period as Grand Nagus, but it’s a ruse designed to test Zek’s son Krax and by the end of the episode Zek is the Nagus again.
