Borderland

In case you skip it...

Despite these episodes not having numbers in their titles, this episode forms a three-parter with “Cold Station 12” and “The Augments”. It isn’t great, but it introduces a couple of elements that will come back later on.

The first is Arik Soong, a geneticist who is strongly implied to be the ancestor of Noonien Soong and is in fact also played by Brent Spiner.

Archer and Arik Soong

Soong is obsessed with genetic engineering, believing that it was a mistake for Earth to outlaw it after the Eugenics Wars. Twenty years ago, he managed to steal some preserved Augment embryos from a medical research station and spent ten years raising them as his children. He was captured and imprisoned, but his “children” survived in hiding for another ten years.

In the present day, the now-adult Augments have grown tired of hiding. They manage to steal a Klingon Bird-of-Prey, liberate Soong, and steal many more embryos before ultimately being defeated and choosing death over capture.

Soong, for his part, returns to prison.
