Most of the events of this film don’t actually matter that much later on, but there are several pieces of trivia that do have effects or get referenced.

• Worf gets promoted from Lieutenant to Lieutenant Commander.
• Data finally installs the emotion chip created for him by Dr. Soong.
• Guinan’s race is officially revealed as El-Aurian, confirming the implication from Deep Space Nine episode “Rivals”.
• The Duras sisters are killed attempting to destroy the Enterprise-D…
• …but they also succeed in destroying the Enterprise-D. Everyone survives via evacuating to the saucer section and separating, but the ship is unsalvageable. It is therefore replaced with the Enterprise-E after this installment.
