In this episode, the question is raised of whether Voyager’s crew should be encouraged or discouraged from having children. If it will take several decades to get back home, the crew may need to be replaced by another generation partway through the trip; but an isolated starship journeying through potentially hostile territory is not an ideal place to raise children.

By the end of the episode, the question becomes a bit moot: Ensign Samantha Wildman is pregnant.

Her husband is back on Deep Space 9, but they’d been trying for some months and apparently succeeded shortly before Voyager went to the Badlands and disappeared, though Samantha has just now found out.
