Seven is apparently practicing her social skills using a holodeck simulation of Voyager and its crew. Within the simulation, she becomes romantically involved with Chakotay.

Unfortunately, her intense emotions trigger a Borg failsafe intended to prevent drones from regaining their individuality, shutting down her cortical node and causing her to pass out. The Doctor thinks he can remove the failsafe and allow Seven to pursue romance, though it will require multiple surgeries, but Seven refuses the treatment out of shame for letting even a fake romance distract her as much as it has.
